Summertime Grouper

Fishing for Grouper just off the local beaches of Tampa Bay is about the same as it always has been, the catching, however, has been better than ever! I'm talking about both Gag and Red Grouper still making a strong showing in water less than 40 feet, in the middle of the day, with water temps in the 90's. I guess there is something to be said about regulations...even if it is done under a false pretense, using bad science. But hey, what do I know, I just fish for a living, right? Here, let me get off this soapbox before I get carried away.

A recent 4-hour fishing charter with repeat client, Peter West, allowed us to do a little research of our own, and Grouper was the target. Peter and his wife, Holly, decided to treat the family, Margaret, Jenny, Emma and Chris to a fun day on the water, with hopes of a fresh Grouper dinner. Well, the Wests' got what they deserved, and after losing many big fish to the shallow rocks, the last spot paid off and the big ones were flying over the rails. Check out Emma and Chris West with a double-header! The Red Grouper actually broke Chris off with his first bait down but the bite remained strong, 15 minutes later he gets hammered again, just as Emma gets railed...it was an awesome victory for both anglers, and Chris's broken leader hanging out of that Grouper was pretty cool to see too. A full day of fun in just 4 hours, and a nice looking fish box to prove it. Way to go gang!
