Grouper digging in the dirt

I've got some new math for you. What does 6 friends + 3 coolers of cold beer + 6 hours of fishing in the Gulf of Mexico equal?...how about 1 great time! Jacob Halligan must have already done some studying before booking a fishing charter with the Jawbreaker crew, and guess what, his figures were right. He and his crew got an A+ on this one.

Post tropical storm Issac left the Gulf of Mexico a mess and when we rounded the Pass we were greeted by nothing but muddy waters that probably extended to 30 miles out. After a failed attempt to catch some live bait, my concern turned to the target fish...Grouper. Where are they after this big storm? Would cut bait be enough? Will the fish even be able to see the bait in this dirty water? So many variables, so little time. After a quick consultation with my co-captain, mate and friend, Chris Clark, we headed West and rolled the dice on some big structure in the 60 foot range. The water was still very dirty and the bite was sporadic as the fish tried to 'find' the source of the stink, we were literally bringing fish up that were hooked in the eyeballs, side of the head and Russell even hooked a big Gag Grouper in the ass! You could only imagine the wise cracking after that one. The guys were having a good time and I didn't care how they were catching em, as long as they were catching em. Before long we were approachng a dozen keepers in the box and the summation of this equation was looking pretty good. I love it when a plan comes together.

Great times indeed...check out the crew with “more fish than we expected” from the left Mike, Jacob, Matt, Brian, Russel and Tyson....tight work fellas. See Ya next year, and happy fishing until then, Capt.Dan
