Nearshore wrecks are still holding Kingfish

With winds out of the East at around 20 knots, Saturday's 6-hour fishing charter was a bit dicey. Although bait was fairly easy to get at the Pass-a-Grille marker, the water color was not right for fishing the beach...in my opinion. Instead, we took our crew of Adrian, Irvin, Trung, Gerardo, Sam and Jeff out into the chop, in search of the big one! These guys handled it well, and our efforts paid off...check out Irvin with the first Kingfish of the day. Way to go Irvin!

Fishing for Kingfish at the St.Pete reef was about the best option we had. High seas offshore are no place to be off your guard though. We even witnessed, and assisted, a crew that was not prepared for what Saturday's weather had to offer. 5 miles offshore is still too far to swim. These guys were in a 16' center console and must have 'stabbed' one of the closely packed waves, instantly the boat is full of water and life jackets are put on. These guys were brought on board another boat and their partially sunk boat was towed in. They were lucky!

After catching a nice Kingfish and then trolling for another hour with no hits, we headed to the Treasure Island reef. TI reef is another 'go to' place for Kingfish and we were instantly rewarded with a very large Spanish mackerel, and with all of the bait present-I felt good about our chances here. Within 30 minutes we had a decent fish on. Adrian took the task of fighting another 20 pounder to the gaff. Several other big hits were lost, as Kingfishing will go, but Sam brought in a big Gag grouper that ate our downrigger bait. Check out other pics in our gallery.

Kingfish steaks on the grill and a few cold beers, I think that was the next step. Call Jawbreaker fishing charters and place your order. We are here to serve you with the best options for producing the big ones! Happy fishing to Ya! Capt.Dan
