Mackerel are making their way to StPete Beach

Fishing for Spanish mackerel and Kingfish near St.Pete Beach is about to become a long awaited option for our fishing charters. With water temps reaching the high 60's we are starting to see the signs of Spring. Glass minnows and smaller frybait have been showing up in massive schools from Tampa Bay all the way out into the Gulf. After this next weak cold front expect to see a push of mackerels come up from the South.

Our 4-hour fishing charter on Friday was host to Sean Epley and his crew, most of whom were visiting St.Pete Beach, from Orlando, to attend Sean's wedding. Sean and his boys were staying at the Trade Winds resort and only had to walk across the street to board the Jawbreaker. We left the dock at 8 a.m. and went straight to the Egmont shipping channel. The birds were there, the minnows were there...the mackerel were not! Bottom fishing was going to be the way to go. These guys did great. Although the grouper bite was a bit slow, we caught Flounder, Seabass, Porgies, grunts and tons of 'throw back' grouper.

I was determined just fool one Spanish mackerel that day and stopped at the Pass-a-grille seabouy for one last shot. We trolled a #1 and #2 planer with clark spoons and were instantly rewarded with this little guy...check out the groom with an early season Spanish mackerel(above pic). Fishing was great and the company was even better. Book your fishing charter with Jawbreaker fishing charters today. Wherever you are staying on St.Pete Beach, we are just a stone's throw away from your hotel. Happy fishing folks! Capt. Dan
