Hot Kingfish bite due West of Johns Pass

Well, it looks like it's going to be a great Kingfish season. The past few days have been quite productive....wait a minute. I thought the Kingfish season was over, and almost happy about it because of the lack of fish that normally migrate to our local waters in the mid-March to May months. We have been getting a few here and there, but today...and yesterday, for all you texters out there...OMG! The Kings have been on fire! I'm pretty sure that we are on to something that most have not quite figured out yet. Not to brag, but when the fishing gets tough the tough go fishing.

Friday's crew included Mike Pusateri and good friends Bill, Bill, Andy and Chris. These guys were ready for some St.Pete Beach offshore fishing action, and it's a good thing...the offshore fishing action was waiting. Perfect weather consisting of clear skies, calm seas and unseasonal low humidity made a beautiful setting for the show that was about to begin. We headed right to the area that was holding good numbers of Kingfish the day before. After gold hooking some additional Sardines and cigar minnows for the livewell we started fishing...let the madness begin.

Instant gratification, you gotta love it! As soon as Jon put a bait in the water it got smoked, one blazing run of a big King doing 50 miles per hour and-pop! Now we're fishing. Part of fishing for Kingfish here in the Gulf of Mexico is losing almost half of the fish that actually get hooked. We use very light tackle for these big, aggressive predators. Many times, the fish could be barely hooked and a little finesse can go a long way to getting that monster to the gaff. That said, we lost about 6 nice fish on Friday but brought home 8 Kings in the 15-22 pound range. There you go Chris, fish tacos for everyone. Check out Mike in the pic above with the first fish of the day...way to go Mike, Jawbreaker style!

Call Jawbreaker fishing charters while the bite is hot. Even if they aren't where we left them chewing the day before, we will find the fish. IMHO, you can't go wrong with the Jawbreaker. Happy fishing to Ya, Capt.Dan
